NEW MPV SETS KIA APART
A full-size seven seater MPV is within the budgets of many new car customers for the first time. The new Kia Sedona range is priced at only £13,995 "on the road" for the "budget-priced" 2.5-litre V6 petrol or 2.9-litre turbodiesel S model and rises to just £19,345 for the top-of-the-range Exec, with automatic transmission, standard leather upholstery and a CD player with eight speakers. All Kia cars benefit from a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty with 3 years roadside assistance including cover in Europe.
The Kia Sedona, offers outstanding space, comfort and versatility. The specification of the Sedona is exceptional with power throughout the range being provided by either an advanced 24-valve "Quad Cam" 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine or a 16-valve 2.9-litre Direct Injection intercooled turbodiesel engine. Unusually, both manual and automatic versions of both engines are available across all four trim levels (S, SE, GSX and Exec).
All models feature driver and passenger air bags, two sliding doors providing easy access to the rear and seven seats including an eight-way adjustable drivers seat (electrically-adjustable and with air cushion lumbar adjustment on GSX & Exec). The two "captains chairs" in the second row can face to the front or rear and slide forward or aft. The first two rows of seats have armrests. There are six height adjustable head restraints. For additional comfort ventilation ducts and a three speed rear heater fan can be adjusted from the rear while rear passengers also benefit from a six speaker RDS
radio/cassette (except Exec with eight speakers and integral radio cassette/CD player).
The standard specification also includes electrically-adjustable and heated door mirrors, front electric windows, variable delay intermittent wipers, a total of eight courtesy lamps with separate control for the rear and the convenience of a lamp delay system. In keeping with the versatility expected of an MPV there are 11 cup holders as well as various strategically placed storage bins, including a drawer under the front passenger seat.
The generous proportions of the Kia Sedona belie an aerodynamic shape with a drag coefficient of just 0.32. This aerodynamic efficiency, combined with the specification of engines which are comfortably up to the task of propelling a vehicle that is 4890mm long, 1900mm wide and 1790mm high (with standard roof rails), can be seen in the frugal extra-urban fuel consumption figure of 41.5mpg for the turbodiesel and 31.7mpg for the V6 petrol. A creditable "combined" fuel consumption figure of 34.0mpg for the turbodiesel gives a touring range of over 560 miles.
The interior offers maximum versatility and spaciousness without the chore of having to take seats out. The "walk-through" nature of the internal layout begins with the gear or selector lever being mounted into the centre console providing sufficient space to move between the two front seats into the rear of the vehicle. Having sliding doors either side and two individual "captains chairs" in the second row improves access to the bench seat in the rear.
The two "captains chairs" can be turned 180 degrees so they face passengers seated in the rear seat. Lap belts are provided for this purpose in addition to the lap and diagonal belts provided for forward travel. The individual second row seats fold forward to provide work tops and along with the rear seat can slide forward to increase/decrease space forward and aft. In order to maximise luggage space the third seat can be folded vertically and slid forward. The rear seat also reclines and when slid forward will recline completely to form a bed.
The modern chassis and suspension set-up along with a wide track and 2.91 metre wheelbase provide a comfortable ride on long journeys. Chassis tuning was carried out in Europe to ensure that it meets the demands of European road conditions.
The engines have been carefully selected to meet the demands of an MPV, able to carry 7-people and their luggage in comfort for long distances. The Sedona is the only MPV with a V6 petrol engine in the "entry model". While the 2.9-litre turbodiesel is the most powerful turbodiesel available in an MPV.
The safety package includes full-size dual front air bags. While a four-channel ABS system is fitted on the SX/GSX and Exec models. A side-impact protection system is fitted in all the doors.
Outstanding success Kia Sedona was launched at the end of September 1999. The car achieved a remarkable 6.3% market penetration in the first half of this year putting it ahead of more established competition such as SEAT Alhambra, Chrysler Grand Voyager, Citroen Synergie, Chrysler Voyager, Peugeot 806, Renault Grand Espace and Fiat Ulysse.
This outstanding success is even more remarkable when it is borne in mind that virtually 100% of these are conquest sales, since Kia had no existing customer base for such a car. The most popular car in the line-up is the SX, which is taking 42% of sales. Over 80% of cars sold are turbodiesels and nearly 40% of Sedona's sold have automatic gearboxes.
The profile of customers for Sedona is 80% male and 20% female with 70% being in the 35-54 age group. Customers are getting out of a wide range of cars to purchase Sedona with Ford Mondeo being the most popular part exchange ahead of MPV's such as the Nissan Serena and Renault Espace.

Kia Sedona Launch - Press briefing
Sedona pricing is built upon the following stance:
Kia introduced a new five-model product line-up in June 1999 with a commitment to making UK prices some of the best in Europe. This price commitment was based on a belief that UK car buyers are paying too much for their cars and consequently that there is an overwhelming downward pressure on UK retail prices.
The European price pledge was accompanied by a price reduction across the range by an average of 13 per cent. This price level is where Kia believes the market will move to and has been reflected across all models in the Kia range and partly explains the Sedona's very competitive pricing.
Kia Sedona was launched at the end of September 1999. The car achieved a remarkable 6.3% market penetration in the first half of this year putting it ahead of more established competition such as SEAT Alhambra, Chrysler Grand Voyager, Citroen Synergie, Chrysler Voyager, Peugeot 806, Renault Grand Espace and Fiat Ulysse How does the Kia Sedona compare?
The "entry level" Kia Sedona is comparable on price with "mini MPV's" typically offering just five seats.
The Kia Sedona is the only MPV to feature a V6 petrol engine in its "price entry" model. When compared to other full-size 7-seater MPV's the Sedona, priced at £13,995, is closest on price to 4-cylinder "entry-level" petrol competitors such as Fiat Ulysse 2.0i S at £17,184, SEAT Alhambra 2.0S at £17,795, Ford Galaxy LX 2.3 at £18,495, Chrysler Voyager 2.0 SE (7-seater) at £19,025 and Renault Espace Alize 2.0 at £19,310.
The "entry level" Sedona S 2.9-litre turbodiesel also priced at £13,995 compares with the Fiat Ulysse 1.9 JTD S at £18,347, Ford Galaxy 1.9 TDi (88PS) LX at £18,700, Citroen Synergie 2.0 HDi LX (7-seater) at £18,970, SEAT Alhambra 1.9 TDi (115bhp) S at £19,595, Chrysler Voyager 2.5TD SE (7-seater) at £20,225 and Renault Espace Alize 2.2DT at £20,910.
The V6 24-valve Sedona S is the best-priced V6 on the market bar none (including saloons/hatchbacks and estates). So customers who are seduced by the sound of a V6 should look first at an MPV!
Customers in the market for a V6 7-seater MPV will have to pay £22,765 or £8770 more than a Kia Sedona V6 which ranges from £13,995 for the S manual to £19,345 for the Exec automatic.
The 16-valve DOHC 2.9-litre turbodiesel is the largest and most powerful turbodiesel engine currently offered in an MPV.
This modern Direct Injection engine provides maximum power of 125bhp @ 3600rpm and maximum torque of 249 lb ft @ 1950rpm.
In terms of external dimensions the Kia Sedona is larger than a Renault Grand Espace but smaller than a Chrysler Grand Voyager.
Sedona was a "Best Value" runner-up in the BBC Top Gear 2000 Awards.
